THE HARBOUR SOCIAL PROJECT CELEBRATES 10th BIRTHDAY
The Harbour project, based at the Octagon in St Mary’s Church, Maldon is this month celebrating ten years since its launch. On 14th April 2008 the first Harbour Coffee Morning opened its doors to the community with the aim of offering a welcome to anyone who wanted somewhere to go to talk and be listened to.
The Project is managed by Maldon and District CVS but is run on a day to day basis by a team of dedicated volunteers.
Sarah Laskar, Director of Maldon and District CVS, was the Development Officer in 2008 when the project first launched:
“Harbour came about through recognition that sometimes people need somewhere to go and be heard. There is not always a need for professional support – sometimes human contact and peer support is the best place to start and this is what Harbour does well.
The volunteer team that we have at Harbour are the soul of the Project and the warm, welcoming environment that is felt during the sessions comes down to their dedication to the Project”
Over the years Harbour has seen many changes and supported many people – there is now access to the internet and a computer available at every session. Volunteers arrange craft activities and quizzes, there is a singing group and volunteers are trained to use the social prescribing database Connect Well to help people find support and activities to help them with their wellbeing.
To celebrate the continuing success of the Project, the Harbour team will be holding a special birthday event on Saturday 14th April 11 am – 1 pm and everyone is welcome to attend. To find out more or to let us know you are attending, please call Catherine on 01621 851891 or email Catherine@maldoncvs.org.uk To find out about volunteering at Harbour see our selection of volunteering opportunities on this page.
A Selection of Current Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteers are needed to act as hosts at Harbour (see our main article). Harbour is a weekly coffee morning taking place on Mondays from 10 to 12 and aims to provide a safe space for the community to relax over a cup of coffee, chat to others and find out about local and national support services and self help resources. Internet access is available. Crafts and activities such as board games and quizzes are available for those who wish to participate. The Project is always looking to develop activities and would like to hear from anyone who has interests they would like to share. Good communication skills, empathy and a friendly manner are required! Training will be provided.
A Maldon Museum is seeking Volunteer Stewards. The Museum is open from March to October on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 2-5 pm and Sunday from 11 – 5 pm. The main role is welcoming visitors, taking money and ensuring the safety of the museum.
