Battle’s Over WW1 Commemoration

Sunday 11 November 6.00pm – 7.30pm

Promenade Park, Maldon

Battles Over. You are invited to join in commemorating 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the first World War.
On Sunday 11 November, Maldon District Council will join the rest of the United Kingdom, and its friends overseas, in an international commemoration of the centenary of the end of the First World War known as ‘Battle’s Over’.
We would like to encourage the whole community to come along and participate in paying tribute to those millions that gave their lives for their country or returned home wounded during or after the dreadful darkness of four years of war.
The evening commemoration event in Promenade Park, Maldon will start at 6pm and will be filled with video, sound, and light, and provide an opportunity to poignantly reflect on what the Great War means to us all.
Please note the evening will contain disturbing images from the First World War as well as some loud noises that some people may find distressing or upsetting.
By kind permission of the Imperial War Museum, we will be showing excerpts from the original 1916 film ‘The Battle of the Somme’ which has been digitally remastered.  This, together with music, readings and the participation of local cadet forces, set against the back drop of the River Blackwater, will provide a memorable and fitting tribute.
At 7pm, Cllr Henry Bass, Chairman of Maldon District Council, will initiate a tribute called Beacons of Light, which will see the beacon lit to signify the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. This beacon will be one of over 1,000 beacons being lit across the United Kingdom at the same time.
Battle’s Over – A Nation’s Tribute has been devised and planned by Pageant master Bruno Peek. “It’s wonderful to see the event being embraced by so many organisations and communities in this country and around the world.
The centenary of the end of the Great War is an opportunity to acknowledge the enormous sacrifice made by millions of men and women who died or were wounded, as well as those who worked tirelessly at home in our fields and factories. It has been a privilege to work on this project with the support of so many amazing organisations” said Peek.
We would like to thank; the Imperial War Museum, Mighty Village and Spectrum Screen Events for supporting our event.
